One Japanese city official has been fined for only three minutes of extra break during work hours to buy lunch.
On Thursday, The waterworks bureau official in the western city of Kobe has done his lunch break earlier from the decided time and got penalized for this. The news sparked a heated debate on Japanese social media, with many defending the official.
“It’s sheer madness. It’s crazy. What about leaving your desk to smoke?” said one Twitter user.
“Is this a bad joke? Does this mean we cannot even go to the bathroom?” said another.
When the media person asked about this incident from concerned officials from the department, he shared that the lunch break is from noon to 1 pm. He left his desk before the break. He has also done the same earlier 26 times over the space of seven months.
He further added that it’s deeply regrettable that this misconduct took place. We’re sorry. This officer has been penalized and half a day’s pay docked as punishment.
