Bharatiya Janta Party is all set to make to 3-0 in these elections held in north eastern India. BJP and NPP are going to head the forthcoming state government in Meghalaya by crushing all hopes of Congress party.
National People’s Party will form the non-congress government along with BJP and others under the leadership of Conrad Sangma from NPP. On Tuesday, new CM will take the legal oath and form the next government in the state. NPP will have partners in this state government like United Democratic Party (UDP), Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP). After a huge political movement in the state, NPP managed to win confidence of three regional parties and an independent.
Key strategist and Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from BJP was in Shillong on Saturday. He reached here soon after having a fractured mandate from people of Meghalaya. Senior leadership of Bhartiya Janta Party had already made it clear to all the leaders in Meghalaya that they should give their best in having a non-congress government in the state. After Conrad Sangma struck a deal with other parties, he met governor Ganga Prasad and claimed to form the new government as he holds support of 34 legislators. All supporting parties MLA were present at this meeting with the governor Ganga Prasad. Himanta Biswa Sarma was also present at this meeting.
In the newly elected House, NPP has 19 legislators while UDP has six, PDF four, HSPDP and BJP two each and one Independent.  PDF has a less structured presence but it won four MLAs. Recent political condition has given boost to NPP and this party has really performed well against Congress. NPP’s CM candidate, Conrad Sangma has won both assembly seats. On Tuesday, he will be the next CM of this coalition led government.
However, there is a huge requirement of stitching in the coalition as they need to smooth rough edges between UDP and Conrad. HSPDP also had some issues with BJP in recent past. Political experts have mentioned that HSPDP and UDP were certainly not keen to come in alliance with Congress. Recent successful performance of Bhartiya Janta Party in two other states especially Tripura and its presence in centre made these two parties to think about this option.
After his meeting with the governor, Himanta Biswa Sarma from BJP said that we have decided that Conrad Sangma will be CM candidate of this coalition. Honourable Governor Ganga Prasad will swear in the new government on this Tuesday.
Conrad Sangma, elder son of late P A Sangma who was the Lok Sabha Speaker, said, “I do understand that running a coalition government can never be that easy. But, I am also having full confidence in all the supporting MLAs who are committed to the state and its people. We will together work for the development of Meghalaya. We have decided that there will be no deputy chief minister in the government.  Coming two-three days are crucial because the assembly term gets over by March 7. Everything has to take place before that.”
