In a recently released statement, Home Ministry has shown its serious concern regarding the surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy for the north-east. This policy was implemented in 1998 to wean misguided youth away from the fold of militancy.
An official from the Home Ministry has shared that this policy was revised beginning April 1 and as per the revised norms, the government will give an immediate grant of Rs 4 lakh to a surrendered militant. Earlier this grant was of Rs one lakh. Other than this, a monthly stipend will also be Rs 6,000 as against Rs 3,500 earlier.
The Home Ministry has also revised the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) Scheme for the north-eastern states. Now, ex-gratia for the death of any civilian during insurgency-related violence would be Rs 2 lakh. The Cabinet Committee on Security has approved Rs 212.85 crore for 11 new police stations and renovation of nine existing police stations in Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
