Officials said that at least 25 school children have complained of nausea, stomach ache and fever after they were given measles vaccine in Assam’s Hailakandi district on Saturday.
Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi district, Adil Khan said that the students of Sahabad ME Madrasa near Katlicherra revenue circle were given Measles Rubella (MR) soon after the mid-day meal, following which many of them started complaining about nausea, fever, stomach ache and also vomiting.
The students were immediately taken to the Katlicherra Block Public Health Centre for treatment. However, now their condition is stable and there was no reason to worry.
Avijit Basu, Joint Director of Health Services said that six students are hospitalized while the rest of the students are kept under observation and will be discharged soon. However, Deputy Commissioner, Adil Khan has ordered the Joint Director of Health Services and District Immunisation Officer to look into the matter and find the reason behind it.
The Deputy Commissioner was sincere and asked the officials to submit a report about the incident immediately. However, the Joint Director said that he examined the vaccines given to the 120 students of the school and they were all in order without any irregularities.
Even DIO K Thambalsena commented that there are no serious issues and the condition of every affected student is now stable. She also added that the MR vaccine was approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) itself and is of high quality.
The DIO also pointed out that there is nothing to worry as it is possible to have common side effects such as fever, rashes, nausea and dizziness in some cases after the MR vaccination is administered. She also said that the vaccination process will be continued for the next couple of weeks until all the children in the age group of 9 months to 15 years are vaccinated.
In this event, as many as 2.15 lakh children of 1,485 schools in the district will be covered as a part of the MR vaccination drive.
