On Monday, a rally cum sit-in protest was held at Kangla Fort. That was jointly organised by All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) and Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA). They were protesting against Manipur Liquor Prohibition (Amendment Bill), 2018.
A press conference was also jointly conducted at the Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) head office located at Pureiromba Khongangkhong, Imphal East.
President of Nupi Samaj, Thokchom Ramani said, “Making a proposal for the controversial bill is highly condemnable. All these protestors have been raising their voices against the selling of intoxicants in order to save the youngsters. If the government passes this bill, alcoholics in the society will increase tremendously and it will give a big blow to our state.”
Dipanjit Ningthoujam, secretary general of CADA said, “Those who are smuggling intoxicants are getting richer and richer while consumers of such substance are losing their lives. If such conditions continue for a longer time period, an imbalanced society will result. It would be better to get funds from the Centre instead of legalising alcohol under Manipur Liquor Prohibition (Second Amendment Bill), 2018 to increase the revenue of Manipur state.”
Well, this bill was then withheld by the state government in the assembly session and it was referred to a five-member select committee for further discussion.
