A four-member committee on exam reform which was formed in January has submitted its report and recommendations to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). For discouraging rote learning and also for judging the analytical abilities of students, this committee has recommended an “open book examination” for engineering courses.
Open book examination is actually allowing students to bring their notes and resource materials inside the exam hall. Here, they can go through their material when answering questions. And, questions need to be structured for judging their understanding of concepts rather than judging their ability to memorise concepts.
Regarding the development of examination papers, this committee has also recommended Bloom’s taxonomy framework for testing the different cognitive skills of students
Several education experts have welcomed this move. However, this report is still to be examined by the AICTE and the human resource development (HRD) ministry. Only after that, there will be any decision on its implementation.
