On Thursday, Congress party’s peaceful rally has been foiled by Manipur Police. Police used tear gas at Congress Bhawan, Imphal.
On the occasion of a memorable day, Quit India movement day, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee and Manipur Pradesh youth congress has planned to march towards Mahatma Gandhi Avenue, Thangal bazaar, to pay floral tributes, to father of the Nation.
Manipur police stopped them at the Bhawan’s gate for not having permission to organise a rally. Former chief minister of Manipur, OkramIbobi Singh was present at the Bhawan when the incident took place. Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president TN Haokip, CWC member Gaikhangam, Congress MLAs, senior party workers etc were also present.
Speaking to media, OkramIbobi Singh claimed that State division of Congress asked for the permission four days back to organise a peaceful rally. But, the government did not respond. Noting that the day is observed throughout the country, the manner in which the BJP government treated the Congress party is like an act of “killing the democracy.” It is anti-national as well as uncivilized manner.
However, the district administration has said that the rally was planned in the silent zone and as a result permission was not granted.
