For Khelo India Development Programme, Sports Authority India (SAI) has given an accreditation to Mary Kom Boxing Academy. Right now, this is the first phase of the accreditation process under the programme. Mary Kom Boxing Academy is the only academy in the northeast region among 32 newly accredited academies across the country.
Talented players will be identified under Khelo India Programme in priority sports disciplines at various levels by High-Powered Committed and they will also get the annual financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakh for 8 years. The accredited academies will receive funds from the central government for training, boarding and tournament expenses of the athletes.
To execute the projects approved under the Khelo India Scheme, Manipur received a small amount of Rs 3.5 crore in 2017-18. This Khelo India Programme targets at the grassroots level, academies like Mary Kom Boxing Academy will play a vital role in its success. In order to sustain needed standards, there will be frequent reviews too. If any academy fails to maintain the desired standard, the accreditation will also be removed.
