Just two days after the Union government decided to resume counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir, news about the end of the BJP-PDP coalition has come. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended its almost 40-month-old alliance with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and withdrew support to her government.
Mehbooba Mufti was busy handling government files at her office in the civil secretariat when she was told of the BJP’s decision.
Jammu and Kashmir chief secretary told this news to her. Taken by surprise, she had a quick meeting with close aides and subsequently submitted her resignation. Then, a press conference held and she said, “We did not form this alliance for power. I submitted my resignation to the Governor and told him that we are not looking to explore any other alliance.”
Before all of this, it was a rapid turn day of politics in Delhi for BJP. BJP president Amit Shah first met national security advisor Ajit Doval, on Tuesday morning and discussed the situation in the state. Then, there was a meeting of BJP ministers in the Jammu and Kashmir state government. Ram Madhav, BJP general secretary, then held a press conference and declared about the withdrawal of support to the People’s Democratic Party.
The arithmetic of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly does not lend itself to an easy alternative. Late on Tuesday, Governor NN Vohra sent a recommendation to the ministry of home affairs for the imposition of Governor’s rule in the state.
