On Thursday, The Supreme Court on Thursday asked 11 states and a union territory to share about the process of appointment regarding Lokayukta or Uplokayukta. A bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice R. Banumathi sought report about these appointments. The honourable bench said that “these appointments need not wait and the process (must) be expedited”.
These include Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Odisha, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh and the union territory of Puducherry.
Earlier, the court asked the Chief Secretaries of the states to explain the reasons for non-appointment of these posts in their respective states or UT.
On Thursday, many states filed an affidavit saying they have been taking steps to appoint Lokayukta or Uplokayukta and some have recommended the name to a selection committee.
