On Sunday, Mumbai has witnessed Blue Tigers’ fifth consecutive win in a multi-national tournament hosted by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The Indian national team lifted the 2018 Intercontinental Cup by defeating Kenya 2-0 in the final. In this quadrangular tournament, New Zealand and Chinese Taipei teams have also participated. India skipper Sunil Chhetri scored both goals in the first half.
The Indian team had won in 2007, 2009 and 2012 Nehru Cups and the previous year’s Tri-Nation series in an unbeaten pattern. Stephen Constantine’s men thumped Chinese Taipei 5-0 in the opening game and then a narrow 2-1 loss to New Zealand. However, that loss was not enough to stop them from entering the final where they beat Kenya.
Sunil Chhetri ended up as the top scorer of this tournament with eight goals. Moreover, Sunil Chhetri has equalled Argentine forward Lionel Messi’s record of 64 international goals scored by an active footballer.
