While addressing the Parliament House, Union minister Hansraj Gangaram Ahir told that the government has not even thinking about amendments in AFSPA. Hence, there is no chance of withdrawal of this Act. Various organizations in Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir region have this demand of withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1990.
This Act gives immunity to the security forces along with special rights of running distinctive operations in disturbed areas.
There was a question raised about the details of a proposal about making the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 more operationally effective and humane. In the reply to this question, Union minister Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said in the Lok Sabha, “There is no such proposal to amend the AFSPA. There is even no proposal with Government of India to withdraw this act from Jammu and Kashmir.”
It is a fact that people are having a long-standing demand from various quarters in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast to withdraw this Act. But, Union Minister has cleared that government is not thinking in this direction.
