To monitor the eco system of Loktak Lake, a floating research laboratory was recently launched. This lab of Institute of Bio resources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) at this lake was launched by Manipur Forest and Environment Minister Thounaoujam Shyamkumar.
Minister Shyamkumar told the media that this laboratory will be working to have a check over the quality of lake water. Due to various reasons, lake water has been polluted and scientists will be researching over it as well as for making organic compost from phumdis. Not just this, they will also be working over alcohol extraction from the special grass.
Forest and Environment Minister Thounaoujam Shyamkumar further added that both state, as well as central government, is concerned about saving eco system around Loktak Lake. IBSD lab will hand over all research data to Loktak Development Authority (LDA) for having furthermore decision to make this lake beautiful.
IBSD Director Prof. Dinabandhu Sahoo also shared with the media that this lab will be covering the entire lake. IBSD took four months to develop this boat based laboratory and it also has a water quality machine to monitor the polluted eco system of the lake. This boat has sitting capacity of 20 to 30 researchers. About alcohol extraction from phumdi, Professor Sahoo told that IBSD scientists have been successful in the process and the team is in process for its commercialization.
