GUWAHATI: Assam is going to be the first State government to launch a cancer care foundation for cheaper treatment of the disease.
According to a report by Indian Council for Medical Research, there were 31,825 cases of cancer is Assam. But the number could be double this figure as most patients diagnosed with cancer leave the state for better treatment.
“The decision of starting this Non-profit Assam Cancer Care Foundation was taken after a recent study that showed that most of the cost incurred by patients is peripheral and not for treatment. The ACCF aims at educating and providing care till the end-of-life,” said Assam Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The Assam government and Tata Trusts are going to provide the fund for ACCF. This project is going to address three critical aspects of cancer- education- research and service. The foundation is going to facilitate treatment at rates below the health scheme of govt.
