On Wednesday, The Meghalaya Land Record and Survey Department began an exercise to survey the land of settlers in Punjabi Lane, a locality at the centre of a communal flare-up in State capital Shillong. This survey was initiated in accordance with the recommendation of the high-level committee formed by the state government.
This committee is to look into the demand of local pressure groups to relocate the inhabitants of the lane, also known as Harijan Colony or Sweepers’ Lane. Women of the locality have protested against this survey. However, Sikh leaders of the area stayed away from the exercise.
P.S. Dkhar, Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district, said “We are not clear about what triggered the protest. We hope to complete the exercise by Thursday.”
Residents in this area say real estate dealers and local leaders have been conspiring to eject them for having a shopping complex on this land.
