Yes, this is nothing short of an Arnold Schwarzenegger’s sci-fi movie. However, this is a genuine report. In the University of California Berkely, Neuroscientists are building a device that’ll hack our brains. Using this device, hacking of a brain will be possible. Its proper use can even edit our feelings and memory. You might be feeling a shock while reading this post. But, there are people actually working on such a device.
To start with this project, they have studies the brains of mice. As per recent update, these researchers have successfully activated and deactivated neurons in the brains of mice. By projected holograms in the animals’ heads, this team has successfully manipulated precise neuron groups. This was done hundreds of times per second to understand their brain’s natural response.
After successful stimulation of these neurons, research has resulted in the possibility of editing the brain. Yes, it potentially exists and brain can be edited. Of course, it is a breakthrough and it sounds like having the god-like control over our senses, memories and feelings. These researchers hope to decode the language of a brain and learn to replicate it too. According to the results of this research, it is theoretically possible now and this technique can implant or erase memories. Now, these researchers are working on more benefits like giving amputees control of prostheses in a natural way like natural limbs.
Alan Mardinly, a postdoctoral fellow in the UC Berkeley lab of Hillel Adesnik has shared about this, “Undoubtedly, this has that required potential for neural prostheses because it comes with the required precision much needed for the brain to have interpretation regarding the pattern of activation. If you have the understanding of the language of the brain, you will be able to speak to it in its language. It means the interpretation of messages will be far easier. Certainly, it is just a tiny step over the long road to actually have such a technology. Technology using which we can actually implant a virtual brain with far better senses.” Alan Mardinly is one of the leading researchers who are writing a paper regarding this ongoing research.
This team has successfully worked over the activation and deactivation of neurons in a group of fifty mice brains. However, this team is still not quite there yet because there will be a big requirement of far more complex machinations for imitating the same over human brain. But they are confident about this technique as it could be scaled to affect thousands of neurons at once, hundreds of times per second.
Certainly, it will require a lot of research work and real-time monitoring of thousands of neurons. Imagine, any device that can influence the brain and produce manufactured stimulus just by having a cut into your skull. You need to wear that device and it shoots holograms in a pretty easy and convenient way to control a prosthetic limb.
Anything to perform one-shot brain modifications can be awesome for human kind. It can be used to facilitate treating pain without drugs. Yes, it could revolutionize how we approach neuroscience. Of course, it sounds like a Hollywood movie story. But the tremendous upside of hacking our own brains in real-time with memories and sensations from reality could make this worth pursuing.
Neuroscientists from the University of California Berkely are on the research mission of building such a device. It could be possible one day because they have been thousand times successful in a mice brain.  We need to wait for having the result of their tests over the human brain.
