Five-time world amateur boxing champion, Mary Kom is officially going to start her boxing academy in Imphal. Coming Friday, PM Narendra Modi will be in Imphal for the formal inauguration of ‘Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation’.
This will be a proud moment for India’s first Olympic medalist woman boxer. In this forthcoming event on March 16, renowned boxer Vijender Kumar and wrestler Sushil Kumar will also be there to boost morale of sportswoman.
Construction of Mary Kom’s Boxing Academy was funded by National Sports Development Fund (NSDF). Manipur government had allotted this land for academy in year 2013.
Mary Kom’s Boxing Academy is in 3.3 acres in the Imphal West district. PM Narendra Modi’s presence will boost this one of its kind, academy’s reach to common man. This academy is just ten kilometre from Imphal and nestled at the foot of Langol Hills. In this three storey building of boxing academy, currently 45 young boxers are taking training and among these young ones, 20 girls are also sweating to learn boxing sports skills.
In the recent Press release, NSDF stated that the foundation is grateful to both central and state government for the establishment of such facilities after many years of struggle since its inception back in year 2006. The foundation also expresses true gratitude to PMO for making to this event and formally handover the buildings to the foundation for promotion of boxing sport.
Mary Kom is an ideal for many young girls in India. Her achievements as a sportswoman have enlightened ways for many girls. She is India’s only woman boxer with an Olympic medal. ‘Magnificent Mary’ has also shown a great performance in Asian Games and won gold medal for the country. This 35 year old woman has also added one golden chapter in her extraordinary life journey by becoming Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha in Year 2016.
Mary Kom’s Boxing Academy in Imphal will certainly be a resource for many wonderful players in boxing sport. India will see the future of this boxing sport, rising from her academy.
