On Monday, the Union Home Ministry has released an official statement about AFSPA. An Official shared that the special act, Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has been removed from Meghalaya and it has now been reduced from 16 police stations to eight in Arunachal Pradesh state too. The act was only in place in Meghalaya for a 20-km area along the Assam border.
AFSPA is an act deployed in “disturbed areas”. It allows forces to kill any person acting in contravention of law, arrest and search any premises without a warrant.
During last 20 years, there is a huge reduction of 85 percent in the count insurgency incidents in NE region because of it.
Home Ministry Official also informed that it has however been extended for another six months in three districts Tirap, Longding and Changlang in the eastern part of Arunachal Pradesh.
