The government has issued notification regarding new targets for a minimum number of Aadhaar enrolments and updates to be done by all banks. As per the last notification in July 2017, all banks were mandated to have an Aadhaar enrolment setup and update facilities inside the bank premises with at least one out of every 10 branches by August 30, 2017.
The IT minister did a video-conference meeting with bank chiefs on August 30. All were agreed to achieve the revised target by October 31, 2018.
Now, the new circular released by the ministry of electronics & IT said, “Though many banks have achieved the target, representations were received from some banks in this regard, pointing out the difficulties faced by them due to natural calamities in various parts of India, technical problems in rolling out enrolment facility, and migration from outsource model to in-house model.”
Furthermore, each branch will be required to achieve eight enrolments/updates per day by November 2018. These numbers will be required to be gradually increased. The new revised terms say that it should be 12 enrolments or updates by January 2019, which should increase up to 16 a day by April 2019.
However, Bank unions are opposing Aadhaar-related work for staff. As per them, all the bank employees were already burdened.
