Yesterday, ‘Protest rally against the prolonged closure of Manipur University’ was organized by the Peace Rally Committee. It was with the demand of restoring normalcy in the varsity. In response to this rally, volunteers of Manipur University community also immediately organised a rally, which resulted in an altercation between the two agitating sides.
Hence, police took action to take control of the area. Police fired tear gas shell to disperse a group of protesters and due to this; eight volunteers of Manipur University (MU) community were reportedly hurt.
A joint statement of the Manipur University community comes after this police action and it says, “We condemned the excessive and unprovoked police action including use of tear gas shell, mock bombs on the democratically agitating members of the University community, especially the students.”
The MUSU general secretary, N. Kennedy said that the state government is now arranging paid protests. He also raised question over the state police for allowing protest in the area under 144 CrPC.
One of the protesters of the Peace Rally Committee said, “This rally is to save the career of students. The rally is not related to any political party. We volunteered ourselves and came out solely without the influence of anyone.”
