After Mohammed Salim, Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem became another Indian who got the attention of a Scottish club. Around eighty years ago, Mohammed Salim was the one Indian who showed dazzling skills to 1,000 Celtic FC members and impressed them. Now, Goalkeeper Dheeraj embarked on a difficult journey from Moirang in Manipur’s Bishnupur district.
Last year, Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem was India’s hero at the Fifa U-17 World Cup. But this young goalkeeper will need to wait even after being offered a three-year contract by Scottish Premiership side Motherwell FC. It is because of strict rules for footballers for having a work permit in the UK. Dheeraj has been giving trials at Motherwell for over two months. He cannot sign a contract until he turns 18 years of age on July 4.
Age is not just the barrier. As per state guidelines for the work permit, a player should have played in at least 75% of his country’s international games in last two years. And, that country should have been top 70 rankers too.
It looks like that Dheeraj wouldn’t get the pass on both parameters.
However, the club is still hoping for having an exceptional permission from authorities.
