Chief Administrative Officer (Construction), NFR, A K Yadav shared that we are having a 517-km roadmap to bring the Northeast region closer to the heartland by 2020. First, we are going to connect all state capitals to the main railway network. After completing this task, new trains would directly link these to the metros in other states of India.
He said that this is going to help regional connectivity within these states and it will also bring the Northeast closer to the rest of India. Certainly, movement of foodgrain, cement, sugar and other utilities to the northeast will be easier. It will also give a huge boost to tourism. However, there are several lands treacherous and above them, various local issues to face. These have to be resolved before we can construct the lines. We have faced kidnapping and demanding ransom for our officials. All such hurdles are causing delays. Yet, we believe to achieve the set target by 2020.
