From Saturday, Manipur government has banned the selling of iced packed fish. Nodal officer (Food Safety) Manipur, Ch. Sanajaoba Meitei has issued this order of ban until further orders.
The state fishery department investigated huge quantity of fish products to determine on the possible presence of formalin in the fish products traded from other states. In the collected samples, traces of formalin were found.
The nodal officer, Ch. Sanajaoba Meitei said, “We have confirmed the presence of traces of formalin in the surveillance samples of iced pack fish products imported from outside the state of Manipur. As a result, the government has imposed a ban not only on sales of iced packed fish products but also declared the same products hazardous to health.”
He further added that Central Food Technological Institute will soon bring out a testing kit at a reasonable price and it will help the people to detect formalin or other harmful preservatives in fish.
