Chhetri has equalled Argentine forward Lionel Messi’s record of 64 goals in terms of the number of international goals scored by an active footballer.
On Sunday, Talismanic Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri came into the match with 62 goals. He scored the first goal of the game in the eighth minute and gave India the much-required lead in the final of Intercontinental Cup 2018 held in Mumbai. However, it wasn’t enough to control Kenya team. Then, he scored the second goal in the 29th minute to ensure the reasonable pressure on the opponent team. Also, this second goal put him on par with Messi.
The 33-year-old Chhetri, who was playing in his 102nd international match, and Messi are behind the leader and Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo who has 81 goals from 150 matches. In terms of a number of goals per match, Sunil Chhetri is better than Messi. He has scored 0.62 goals per match as against 0.52 of Messi.
Sunil Chhetri also became the second Indian to feature in 100 international matches after former skipper Bhaichung Bhutia.
