On last Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi awarded bureaucrats for making Manipur’s Karang the first cashless island of India. They have been appreciated for implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and various other initiatives of the Central Government.
PM gave the award to Deputy Commissioner of the district for promoting digital payment.
Manipur’s Karang Island is one remote and backward region. From a long, this island was cut-off from the Bishnupur district because of the insurgency. Now, various incentives were given for training towards digital payments and also, five POS machines were installed on the island. Several youth clubs have given their time for community mobilisation and parallel activities were conducted on the island for Aadhaar enrolment and the opening of bank accounts.
In the last 20 months, 92 % bank accounts were seeded with mobile. Out of which 70% were seeded with Aadhaar too.
