In February, the Punjab and Haryana high court had asked the CBSE board to look for the possibilities of extended facilities to students with disabilities under the revised Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Act. Thus, a panel of representatives from various examination boards, advocates, parents, disabled students and research experts was formed.
Yesterday, this panel has suggested including Indian Sign Language as a subject, offering Braille as a language option and providing various difficulty levels of core subjects for students with special needs as part of curriculum and examination reforms.
According to a CBSE official, now the board will see how these can be implemented.
Stuti Kacker, former secretary , Disability Affairs, in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and currently the chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), said, “These are good suggestions and measures that have been suggested by the panel which will help students with disabilities in coping with regular schooling. There is always scope for more.”
