Manipur Governor Dr. Najma Heptulla is awarded by the Indian Parliamentary Group (IPG) for the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award. On receiving this news, she showed her gratitude and thanked the group for this award. She said this was really good news and certainly proud moment for her.
Dr. Najma Heptulla had been an active Parliamentarian and worked in various capacities for almost four decades. She further said she found members happy with her decisions as Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha in her Parliament period of seventeen years. She tried her best to perform the role in the non-partisan manner of charging the Upper House. Earlier, Dr. Najma Heptulla was also awarded with the best presiding officer award.
Recalling the Rajya Sabha period, she said she was also elected as the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in 1999 in Berlin. This Inter-Parliamentary Union was configured as a body of over 170 Parliaments from various countries across the globe. Till that moment, she was the first woman to be elected as the President of Inter-Parliamentary Union. Her contribution for promoting and strengthening democracies across the world was also recognized by the Union body and she was nominated as Honorary Life President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 2002.
Since August 21, 2016, Dr. Najma Heptulla is appointed Governor of the state. During her tenure, she has seen serious political changes. She has smartly handled various sensitive issues and also, managed well to earn a place in the heart of people by allowing masses to approach Raj Bhawan without any sort of hesitance. She calmly listens to the grievances of the people from every section of society. With another feather in the cap, Dr. Najma Heptulla continues to bring ambitious projects for the state to help the poor and the needy.
