Normal life in Manipur state especially in the valley area has been paralysed due to Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) call for the 48 hours general strike. Yes, it was the move for intensifying its demand for removal of vice-chancellor and it started from July 17 midnight.
MUSU had launched the protest to oust the VC from May 30, alleging the latter of committing administrative and financial mismanagement in the campus.
All business establishments, Government and private institutes remained shut. However, no incident of violence was reported till the time of filing this report.
The main markets of the two districts including Thoubal market, Kakching market, Yairipok market, Wangjing market amongst others were deserted and shops were closed down. The strike also affected the Indo-Myanmar border trade as all shops in Moreh town remained closed.
Meanwhile, the Manipur University community has rejected appeal of co-operation to the reconstituted fact-finding committee. A joint statement released by the agitating community said that the removal of vice-chancellor, Adya Prasad Pandey, is a sine quo non to precede any intervention to resolve the present crisis in the varsity. Structure of this reconstituted fact-finding committee is an absolute insult to the intelligence of the people of the state because the reconstituted committee neither looks independent nor judicial.
