From Saturday, use of plastic bags, takeaway containers from your favourite restaurants and even garbage bags become illegal in Mumbai. To ensure people take this ban seriously, the BMC has decided to fine offenders Rs 5,000 for the first offence. However, the fines will be imposed only from Monday.
A 249-member squad from BMC will be on the roads of the city. They will be in dark-blue waistcoats. Firstly, they will increase awareness about this ban on the use of plastic bag. Later on, they will be authorized to impose a penalty at the same moment. Deputy Municipal Commissioner (special) Nidhi Choudhari, said, “We understand that the public should know who they are. We have given details of all the squad members on the MCGM website. Each member will be having a signed letter from the local deputy municipal commissioner that authorises them to fine people. ”
If hawkers without licenses are found violating the ban, the squad will seize the plastic bags and other items. In case of hawkers with licenses, they will have to give their details when the squad registers the offence. If citizens were noticed violating the ban, they can be booked under IPC section 353— assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging the duty.
