Meitei Mayek will be introduced in Saakshar Bharat programme of the department of adult education Manipur. Director M. Joy Singh told that this will be done in the coming session of 2018-19. He was addressing Press in the recent press conference organized by information and public relations department at Moirangkhom.
Mr. Singh further added that department will offer support as teaching material provider and the department will look for assistance from experts in terms of script work.
State nodal officer, A. Romeo also presented a report on Implementation of Saakshar Bharat Programme. In compliance with 73rd constitutional amendment, this programme is implemented under the Panchayati Raj Institution at district and Gram Panchayat levels. He told press that this programme was initiated back in 2010 in just four districts of the state. These districts were Senapati, Tamenglong, Chandel and Thoubal. However, Central Government sponsored scheme of Ministry of Human Resource and Development was launched on September 8, 2009. Under this programme, there are four main activities; imparting functional (Basic) Literacy, Basic Education (Equivalency), Vocational (skill development) and continuing education.

  1. Romeo also shared that there are 321 adult education centres actively running in the state; 59 centres in Chandel, 142 centres in Senapati, 56 centres in Tamenglong and 64 centres in Thoubal. According to the reports available till March 2017, the department provided Basic Literacy to 89,134 out of 1,00,633 target learners. Department is also offering vocational education mainly on tailoring, food processing and preservation, doll making, carpenter, etc.

Gaijinpou Thaimai, assistant director and director IPR, Meghachandra Kongbam were also present during the press conference.
Further, the official shared with media persons that the department has also initiated to include districts not included initially. Department has also advised to implement this programme in pretty low literacy areas. Such implementation can be on block level or in some other form. Empowerment of the deprived section of the society was also another main objective of the programme and the same has been implemented successfully.
