After one suicide bomb blast in Jalalabad on Sunday, many people from Afghanistan’s dwindling Sikh minority are considering to come back to India. Right now, there are almost 300 Sikh families in Afghanistan having just two gurdwaras in Jalalabad and Kabul.
Before the devastating civil war in the 1990s, Afghanistan was home to as many as 250,000 Sikhs and Hindus. Many of them have left the country after facing prejudice and harassment as well as violence from militant Islamist groups. Last bomb blast was also targeted at Sikh leaders. Sikh Community has official political representation and freedom of worship in Afghanistan. But, the Jalalabad attack made some Sikhs to have shelter at the city’s Indian consulate.
Vinay Kumar, India’s ambassador to Afghanistan said that they can all live in India without any limitation. We are here to assist them.
