On Wednesday, the students’ agitation demanding removal of the Vice
Chancellor completed 29 days. The academic activities of the Manipur
University remained suspended. Manipur University Students Union
(MUSU) wants removal of the vice-chancellor Prof Adiya Prasad
Pandey. Union is on this strike because VC was failed to appoint
members in important posts, lavish travelling and hampering academic
functioning in the Manipur University.
However, the vice-chancellor had earlier dismissed all these allegations.
Ever since this agitation started, six deans have resigned citing the
prevailing crisis. Even Joint Secretary V C Hosur, Department of Higher
Education, HRD ministry had also visited Imphal on June 22. Joint
Secretary met the student and afterwards, with CM N Biren Singh too.
Students’ demands and this on-going agitation have also been
supported by locals and political parties. However, Manipur unit of BJP
has asked other parties to avoid politics over internal matter of a
university and suggested for a high-level fact finding committee.
