Yesterday, former chief minister, Okram Ibobi Singh interacting with media persons during a press conference held at Congress Bhawan BT road. He said that one agreement was signed on March 10, 1967, between the government of India and Myanmar. On the basis of that agreement, state government can resolve the current boundary issue after having a re-survey and re-demarcation of the whole Manipur sector.
He further added that this re-survey and re-demarcation should be conducted by involving all stakeholders.
The issue came to light when Tengnoupal deputy commissioner Tombikanta claimed that border pillar 81 was erected at least 3km inside Indian Territory. Tombikanta had also said that Central government officials had instructed him to sign on papers regarding border pillars but he declined to sign them.
The total length of the Indo-Myanmar boundary is 1643 Km. Now, controversies over boundary pillars have cropped up at other places too due to delay on the part of the government of India to resolve the issue.
Reacting to the Manipur University issue, Ibobi said that state government should take the initiative as a mediator and initiate dialogue between the two confronting parties as soon as possible.
The former chief minister also advised the government to implement the recommendation of 7th pay commission in the state.
