On Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh regarding Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. This meeting yielded an assurance from Home Minister that one committee will be formed to make recommendations for implementation of clause 6 of Assam Accord.
Clause 6 of Assam Accord is about proving constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to protect and promote culture, social, linguistic identity and heritage of Assamese people.
However, citizenship Bill is something opposite of this as it advocates of granting citizenship to non-Muslims from other countries. This bill has been opposed by Assamese-speaking people in the state on the basis of Assam Accord signed after a six-year anti-foreigners’ movement from 1979.
Post-meeting, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowol said, “The Home Minister said that he has assured that before taking any step, the people of Assam state will be taken into confidence.”
