From the start of this week, China has continued sharing data about Brahmaputra with India. In the month of March, Indian water resources ministry team met officials from China. It was promised during that meeting.
TS Mehta, commissioner Brahmaputra has also confirmed it and shared that China is now sharing the data on Brahmaputra and it will start sharing data on Sutlej from June too. Earlier, Beijing maintained that they are working on its hydrological stations and that was causing hurdles for them in sharing any data about the river. However, China was sharing the same with Bangladesh.
TS Mehta further added that Brahmaputra gets severely flooded during monsoon months. Hence, this data is important for predicting floods. It will be really helpful for North east region.
Strategic affairs expert Brahma Chellaney has specialization in water issues. She said in an interview, “Nowadays, both countries are talking on different platforms and meeting of Indian PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping had melted the ice too. Under the bilateral agreement between India and China, China is bound to release hydrological data on both rivers as India has already paid for the data.”
