Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the excellent Prime Minister and a hero of his generation. His language was as mellifluous as his smile. Yes, we can say that his weapon was the word, not the sword. He will be remembered as the master of wordplay. His language was as honeyed as his smile; full of the goodwill of geniality. Anger was never a part of neither his personality nor his preference.
Well, he was angry in public just once, at a rally in Delhi in January 1977. On that cold January evening, Vajpayee’s speech was full of sarcasm and also, infused with faith in the Indian people. After Indra Gandhi’s imposed emergency, that speech had valuably lit the fuse that led to a revolution. He was angry not merely because he had been sent to jail; or because the political process had been usurped by Congress. Atal’s main concern was the future of Indians.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee had written his own destiny. He was the son of a school-teacher. When he was a student, he joined Gandhi’s Quit India movement in 1942. He did not enter politics to become prime minister of India. He was the champion of democracy and always counted freedom as the process of serving people.
As prime minister, Vajpayee wrote an indelible chapter in India’s history on 11 May 1998. With the detonation of one fusion and two fission bombs, he made the world understood his vision of making India a powerful, stable and developed country. Vajpayee’s cool, and silent, steps to this visionary horizon took the world’s breath away. After that, Kargil war was again the test of Vajpayee’s leadership.
Between a nuclear arsenal and Kargil, he had proved to Pakistan the futility of terrorism and war. Atal was clear about a critical fact: peace is possible only when security is achieved.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee was also well known for his poetry. Such combination of poet and politician is rare. He was equally honest to both poetry and politics. That is what lifted him from excellent Prime Minister to a hero of his generation.
