Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) organized a protest march towards Raj Bhavan and BJP Manipur office. This was done for resolution of Manipur University issue. When police were trying to disperse students, seven students including secretary general of DESAM were injured
The agitation was in support of the MU community’s demand for immediate removal of the vice-chancellor. In front of Raj Bhawan gate, the students shouted “Remove irresponsible VC Pandey”, “Solve Manipur University crisis”.
Shital Oinam, general secretary of DESAM said that this is really unfortunate that state government is saving the ‘irresponsible’ vice-chancellor and not worrying about the career of the students. DESAM strongly condemns the stubborn act of HRD minister. This ongoing standoff between the varsity and VC has affected the 86 institutions affiliated to the varsity. Graduate students failed to get mark-sheets for semester examination which is directly hindering their future.
During this agitation, Shital Oinam fell down as police were trying to push back these students and in the same time, one truck crushed his left arm. Not just this, seven students including two girls were also injured during this police student clash near Raj Bhawan. All the seven students were rushed to Raj Medicity.
MUSU, Manipur University Teachers’ Association and Manipur University Staffs’ Association held an emergency meeting on the police action against the students. They condemned the brutal Manipur Police treatment to the volunteers of DESAM and demanded an immediate magisterial enquiry.
General Secretary of MUTA, Prof. L. Shanjukumar Singh cautioned that the current agitation would not be withdrawn despite the formation of a fact-finding committee by union HRD ministry to investigate over the allegations made against the vice-chancellor Pandey.
DESAM also demanded the state government to suspend those police personnel involved in lathi-charging the students by July 18.
