As per National Health Profile 2018, India’s public health expenditure is 1% of the GDP. In 2014, it was 0.98% of the GDP. It has certainly improved. Still, it is way behind even the low-income countries that spend 1.4% of the GDP. India’s neighbour countries are having better percentage invested in Health. Bhutan (2.5%), Sri Lanka (1.6%) and Nepal (1.1%) are good examples in this case.
However, India’s National Health Policy 2017 proposes raising the public health expenditure to 2.5% of the GDP by 2025.
Union health minister Jagat Prakash Nadda said, “We are working on it and are hopeful of meeting the target. In case of maternal and infant mortality rate, we are improving at a greater rate than the global target.”
