IMPHAL | Jun 3: The All Loktak Lake Areas Fishermen Union, Manipur (ALLAFUM) observed the World Environment Day prior to the occasion at the conflux of Nambul and Nambol rivers, on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”. Renowned environmentalists, social activists, and health mentors attended the observance.
This observance is going to last till 5th June and ALLAFUM will clear plastic from the lake during this time, said Oinam Rajen, Secretary of ALLAFUM. He also added, “The amount of plastic carried by Nambul Rivers is alarming and thus the theme of the observation is rightly apt. Over the years, around 5 km of Loktak got covered with plastic”.
“Pesticides, untreated sewage, oil, grease, medical waste also contribute to polluting rivers along with plastic and other solid waste”, he further added.
Many other influencers and politicians attended the observation and also shared their views and urged people to reduce the use of plastic materials like bottles, straws etc as much as possible.
