The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has drafted the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizen Draft Bill, 2018. A team has reviewed the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 and suggested few changes in it.
According to a senior official, there will be an increase in the jail term for those who abandon or abuse their elderly parents, to six months from the existing three months. In the existing act, only biological children and grandchildren were covered. However, reviewing team has also proposed widening the definition of children to include adopted or step children, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law too.
The official said that new act will have relevant changes in monthly allowance condition too. People who are earning good monthly income, they should be responsible for paying more monthly allowances.
