Yesterday, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has disclosed the names of five international weightlifters, including gold medallist Sanjita Chanu for testing positive for banned substances.
As per a statement from IWF, As a consequence of the test result, the Athlete is provisionally suspended in view of a potential anti-doping rule violation.
If proven guilty, Sanjita will have to face a four-year suspension. However, Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) is going to challenge the suspension. Sanjita was tested last November and the positive result for doping comes on May 15.
The news will further hit the Indian weightlifters too. As per new rule, IWF will limit countries to one male and one female entry at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics if they have had more than 20 doping cases in the sport since July 2008. This is a big setback for Indian weightlifting.
